2010 - The Year of Influence

As we move into a New Year and arguably a new decade, I shall make a prediction: The ability to influence others will be the most desired and potent currency of business. Influence is defined as – "The ability to shape and mold the opinions of others."

If am a leader, the events of the past two years have taught me that becoming an Influential Leader is not about charisma, it’s about character. It’s about the attitudes and behaviors a person models every day. It’s about having clear values and having the courage to live those values. It’s about creating an environment where people feel that their work is important, that they are important, and, as a result, they are influenced to perform at the highest levels.

If I am a salesperson, my greatest challenge is becoming a more Influential Salesperson – someone who stands out from the crowd. Cost and time pressures have left customers assessing every interaction I have with them. What value is this salesperson delivering to me? Is this person providing a unique perspective? Are they trying to “sell” me or provide valuable counsel that helps my business? Ultimately, do this person’s actions influence me to invest in an ongoing relationship?

If 2010 is a year in which we desire to increase our influence, then first we need to understand that how others feel about us is determined by our actions. Our level of competence or mastery of what we do obviously has powerful influence, but it is who we are, what we stand for and how we empower and contribute to others that are the cornerstones for becoming more influential.
