Examining standards holds up a very useful - but not always flattering - mirror. A person might feel and even have the "certificate" to prove that he or she is very well qualified in a given area, but unless an individual consistently demonstrates his or her competencies in a distinctive and relevant way, full recognition and credit will not be given by others. Your standards, therefore, significantly influence how others perceive you. For example, if you want to be seen as really committed to doing a great job, what are your quality standards? If you want to be perceived as being on the cutting edge in your field, how much time do you set aside for personal research and development? Having high standards is not about trying to please everyone. However, it is about being aware that the strength of your brand in both your professional and personal relationships will be determined by the impressions you make everyday on the people that matter and are important to you.
The lesson: You can't control the perceptions of others, but you can guide people to perceive you as you want to be seen, based on your willingness to continually "raise the bar" in terms of your standards.
