THE WINNER'S EDGE - TEAM SPIRIT

'A triumph of the human spirit' is the way we describe the achievements of those who have managed to access the very best that is within them. You can't touch the human spirit and you certainly can't buy it. Spirit may lay dormant in many but, when stirred from its slumber, it inspires great thoughts and great actions.

The famous choreographer, Martha Graham spoke to this when she said: "Great dancers are not great because of their technique; they are great because of their passion."

Team Spirit begins with a deep commitment by a group of individuals to a common purpose. We witnessed this level of commitment when the Indianapolis Colts recently won the Super Bowl. But, what about the runners-up, the Chicago Bears? And how about all the teams that made the play-offs? What drove these never-give-up contenders? I believe they are all excellent examples of team spirit.

Fortune Magazine's annual report on America's most admired companies provides insight into the enormous benefits of the commitment to developing team spirit when it stated: "If there is one characteristic that sets the most admired companies apart it is there robust cultures."

A robust culture is the breeding ground for both individual and team spirit. A robust culture means a strong, vigorous environment for learning, accomplishment and growth. Among the rewards of a robust culture are loyalty, creativity, exceptional levels of performance, and Wall Street's ultimate measurement - superior profits.

Here are a few ideas on how to build a strong team spirit in your organization:

  • Articulate and operate within a core set of values. Be impeccable about fairness, honesty and respect for the individual.

  • Provide clear direction and a sense of purpose. Money certainly motivates but it doesn't inspire. The desire to be the best comes from the inside, not the outside.

  • Make trust-building a top priority. It is the foundation of high performing teams. Trust is built by being straightforward, reliable, open, and accepting.

  • Value the uniqueness of each player. Loyalty is earned from caring as much about the person as the performance.

  • Build on strengths, manage weakness. Know what positions people play best and where they are vulnerable.

  • Listen to, acknowledge and celebrate each player's contribution early and often.

Finally, don't buy into the fallacy that winning is all that matters. To win by cheating or deception of any kind is to degrade the nobility of sport or destroy the integrity upon which any truly successful business is built. The great tennis champion, Martina Navratilova, said: "The moment of victory is much too short to live for that and nothing else."
